What Is a Foundation Year?
A foundation year is an extra year of study before the first year of a degree. It is usually designed for students who want to go to university but do not yet meet the standard entry requirements for direct entry onto year one.
For many adults, it can be a practical route back into education.

Who is a foundation year for?
A foundation year may be suitable if you:
-
Do not have A-Levels
-
Left school without strong qualifications
-
Have been out of education for a long time
-
Want to change career
-
Have work experience but limited academic qualifications
-
Need more confidence before starting a full degree
It is not a shortcut. You still need to study, attend classes, complete assignments, and show that you are ready for higher education.
Is a foundation year the same as a foundation degree?
No. They sound similar, but they are different.
A foundation year is normally the first year of a longer degree pathway. After completing it, you usually move into year one of the main degree.
A foundation degree is a separate higher education qualification, usually equivalent to the first two years of a degree. Some students later “top up” to a full bachelor’s degree.
Can I do a foundation year without A-Levels?
In some cases, yes. Entry requirements vary by university and course. Some providers may consider your work experience, interview, personal statement, previous study, or overall ability to succeed on the course.
This is especially relevant for mature students who may not have followed the traditional school-to-university route.
Can I get student finance for a foundation year?
Some eligible foundation years may be covered by student finance, but it depends on the course, provider, your residency status, and your previous study. You should always check before applying.
Is a foundation year worth it?
It can be worth it if it gives you a realistic way into university and prepares you properly for degree-level study. It may not be the right option for everyone, especially if a shorter course, Access to HE Diploma, HNC, HND, or direct entry route would suit you better.
